You've got 3,000 people who clicked through to your Telegram channel or bot last quarter. Meta has no idea any of them exist. Your ad account is still targeting cold interest categories while your best, highest-intent audience data just sits in a CSV nobody uploaded anywhere.

That's the gap. Telegram doesn't hand you a native pixel-to-Meta integration, so most teams never close the loop between "someone clicked my Telegram link" and "Meta knows to find more people like them." Here's how to actually do it.

How many contacts do you need for a Meta lookalike source audience?

Meta recommends a seed (source) audience of at least 100 people to build a lookalike, but accuracy improves sharply once you're above 1,000 — and most media buyers treat 1,000-2,500 as the real minimum for a stable, repeatable lookalike. Below 100, Meta either won't process the audience or the match quality will be too thin to trust.

This matters specifically for Telegram data because your "clickers" list is usually smaller than your overall ad reach. You're not uploading page visitors — you're uploading people who actually clicked through to a Telegram bot, channel, or group. That's a qualified list, which is exactly why it makes a better seed than generic site traffic, even at a smaller size.

Step 1: Get your Telegram click data into a usable format

Before Meta can do anything, you need a clean list of the people who clicked your Telegram link — not just a click count. There are a few ways to capture this depending on where the click happened:

  • Pixel-tracked link clicks: If you're running Meta ads that link to a Telegram bot or channel, you should already have a Meta Ads pixel set up to track Telegram click-throughs — this gives you event-level data Meta can use directly, no manual upload needed.

  • Bot/channel join data: Export the list of users who joined your bot or channel after clicking, including their phone number or Telegram username if captured during onboarding.

  • CRM-tracked leads: If click data flows into your CRM as a lead record, export that list with whatever contact fields you have — email, phone, or Telegram handle.

Whatever the source, you need a spreadsheet with at least one matchable identifier per row: email, phone number, or (less ideal for Meta, but useful upstream) a Telegram username.

Step 2: Enrich thin Telegram data before you upload it

Here's the catch most people miss: Meta's Custom Audience matching works off emails, phone numbers, and mobile advertiser IDs — not Telegram usernames. If your Telegram click data is just a list of usernames with no phone or email attached, Meta can't match most of it, and your audience will underperform.

This is where enrichment pays off before you ever open Ads Manager. CRMChat includes a phone number to Telegram converter and matching enrichment tools that work both directions — turning phone lists into active Telegram contacts, or helping you build out richer contact profiles for people who only showed up as a Telegram click or username. The platform reports a roughly 50% phone-to-Telegram match rate for India, CIS, and MENA audiences, and about 30% for EU, UK, and Americas audiences — numbers worth knowing before you assume every click will be matchable.

If you're short on volume after cleaning your list, this is also the point to widen your source data rather than upload a thin list straight to Meta:

  • Pull in your existing CRM contacts who also engaged with Telegram content.

  • Cross-reference your Telegram click list against your broader lead database to fill in missing emails or phone numbers.

  • Use parsed group member data as a secondary enrichment layer, not your primary seed — clickers are higher-intent than general group members.

Step 3: Build the lookalike seed audience in Meta Ads Manager

Once your list has matchable identifiers, the upload itself is standard Meta workflow:

  1. In Ads Manager, go to Audiences and click Create Audience → Custom Audience.

  2. Select Customer list as the source.

  3. Upload your cleaned CSV with emails, phone numbers, or both as columns.

  4. Map the columns correctly when prompted — mismatched headers are the #1 reason match rates come in low.

  5. Wait for Meta to process the match (usually a few minutes to a few hours depending on list size).

  6. Once the Custom Audience is live, click Create Audience → Lookalike Audience and select your new Custom Audience as the source.

  7. Choose your target country and a similarity percentage — start at 1% for tightest match quality, widen to 2-5% if you need more scale.

Expect your matched audience to land somewhere between 40-70% of your uploaded list, depending on data quality. A list built from enriched phone-to-Telegram data will generally match better than a raw username export, since Meta has more identifiers to work with per row.

What should you include in the seed list to improve lookalike quality?

Not every Telegram "click" is equal, and dumping every click into one undifferentiated list produces a weaker lookalike than a curated one. The strongest seed audiences are built from people who took a second action after clicking — joined the channel, replied to the bot, booked a call, or converted into a CRM deal.

If you're running outreach sequences alongside your ad campaigns, pull your seed list from people who actually engaged with a Telegram outreach or warm-up sequence rather than everyone who merely clicked the ad link. Engagement-filtered lists consistently produce tighter lookalikes than raw click lists because Meta's algorithm has cleaner signal to work from.

How do you keep feeding the lookalike audience fresh?

A lookalike audience built once and never updated decays — Meta's matching gets stale as your actual customer profile shifts. Set a recurring process instead of a one-time upload:

  • Re-export your Telegram click/engagement list every 2-4 weeks and refresh the Custom Audience source.

  • Segment by funnel stage — build separate lookalikes from "clicked only" vs. "clicked and converted" lists, since they perform differently.

  • Exclude converted users from your ad targeting once they're already customers, so your lookalike budget isn't wasted re-targeting people you've already closed.

  • Track match rate over time — a dropping match rate usually means your identifier quality (phone/email completeness) is slipping upstream.

If your Telegram click data flows into a CRM, this refresh cycle gets a lot less manual. CRMChat automates lead capture and enrichment from Telegram activity so your exportable contact list stays current without someone manually re-pulling data every few weeks — you can route that same enriched list straight into your next Meta Custom Audience refresh. The CRMChat API also makes it possible to automate the export-and-sync step entirely if you're running this on a schedule.

Common mistakes that tank lookalike performance

  • Uploading usernames with no phone or email. Meta can't match on Telegram handles — enrich first.

  • Using a seed audience under 100 people. You'll either get rejected or get a low-quality match.

  • Mixing cold clicks with converted customers in one list. Separate them for cleaner signal.

  • Never refreshing the source list. Stale data produces a stale lookalike that drifts from your actual audience.

  • Ignoring regional match-rate differences. If most of your clicks come from a region with lower phone-to-Telegram match rates, budget for a smaller final audience and plan targeting accordingly.

If you're building out a broader Telegram-first acquisition stack and this lookalike workflow is just one piece of it, it's worth seeing how the rest fits together in a Telegram-first lead generation martech stack. And if your click data is currently stuck in spreadsheets with no CRM behind it, CRMChat's Help Center walks through getting Telegram leads organized before you ever touch Ads Manager.
